Take a Look at Formulas, and Breast Feeding.

Of course, Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your baby. The first milk is called Colostrum and is packed full of antibodies to protect him for the first 3 months, and it will boost his immune system. You will have colostrum for the first few days. Then after that, your milk will come in. Most women Will become engorged. The breast will be hard and uncomfortable. The best thing to do is breastfeed every couple of hours. Or manually express or pump out just enough milk to make the nipple softer so baby can latch on. It is hard to latch onto an areola and nipple that is stretched to the max with milk. Don’t worry your breast milk supply usually comes to a point of matching your baby’s appetite. If you are blessed with more milk than you need, check and see if there are any place in your town that keeps breast milk for babies who can not tolerate formula.

Before you even give birth, it is a good idea to try to get your breast ready for the job of breastfeeding. When you go to the bathroom is a good private time to rough up your nipples with heavy stuff dry washcloth. And it doesn’t hurt to try pulling on your nipples slightly. A little preparation goes a long way.

When you do give birth the nurse may have you try to breastfeed right away. But usually when you are in your room. It helps tremendously in getting your uterus to clamp down and you will bleed less. And it is great to try to get baby to latch on as soon as possible.

Breastfeeding isn’t a totally natural process. You and baby need a little learning curve. But definitely try it when the baby is awake. Your position with your opposite hand than the breast. Your breast between your thumb and fingers. Not to close to the areola. In a way that makes the nipple protrude the most. Rub your baby’s lower lip with your nipple or touch it to his cheek to get him to turn his head towards you. Have your baby in one of three positions.

  1. Position the baby across your abdomen with his head toward the breast to be nursed.
  2. In a football type hold. Always supporting their head.
  3. laying down with the baby facing you. your breast and babies face should be at the same level or the breast a little higher.

Don’t get frustrated if you don’t connect well the first few times. And don’t be concerned if it gives you cramps. It is OK. The nurses are there to help. So ask if you aren’t getting help. Or see if the hospital has videos or a lactation specialist. Relax, it is the best thing so it will all flow easily. After a while, you will be a pro. And whenever you hear your baby cry your milk will come out so wear nursing bras and pads. They are your friends.

That covers a few of them. Rest assured that no matter what you choose it will be fine. There aren’t any companies out there that would deliberately harm our babies. As far as breastfeeding it is still best. But there are really good reasons for not breastfeeding. Not all of us are blessed with a nipple that makes it possible to breastfeed. Or some people, their milk just doesn’t seem to come in.

I for one was unable to. I tried, very hard. I really wanted to. Please don’t feel depressed and guilty because you can’t. My problem was lack of nipple. they were tiny and when my milk came in they disappeared. I fed my first girl for 1 month, every hour she woke me up. The doc and nurses kept saying’No don’t supplement. Your milk will come in.” After 1 month I got some formula and decided to give her a bedtime bottle. So I breastfed, gave her the 4 oz. of formula. She slept all night. It was the first time her belly was full since she was born. And I checked my breast, in the morning, nothing there. I was giving her 2oz. in the hospital down to nothing at home. My poor baby girl was starving to death. she was lucky to have received enough fluids that her organs didn’t shut down.

Another reason is if you have to go back to work. It is pretty hard to breastfeed 2 weeks then stop. for one your milk is in and you will suffer by not breastfeeding. There are many working mothers that pump milk and put it in the fridge. It can even be frozen. Then at work, on break, they pump again and refrigerate it, take it home. You will go home to a happy well-fed baby. Placing ice on your breast for the engorgement. and two the baby gets used to the natural nipple and hates a rubber nipple.

That is it in a nutshell. All the formulas are so similar. All parents want the best for their babies. Maybe ask your doctor, Mom, or other bottle feeding Moms if they have a preference and why. Always check the prices. Organic is more expensive. But in this day and age maybe it is worth it. Our kids don’t need extra growth hormones or strange additives. I will try to find you 1-month supplies in each Brand. Well, unfortunately, most brands are reluctated to say it is enough for 1 month. Because depending on your baby’s age and appetite, it will last a different amount of days. But I see Amazon has an auto-delivery option. They will deliver to your door when you should be due and want more. You can always postpone a delivery.

Disposable diapers

There are as many disposable diapers out there as there are brands of towels. To let you know I am an Amazon affiliate so if you click on my links that is where you will go. I will get a bit of commission. That is how I keep this site rolling. The commission I am paid in no way affects the price. As far as what brand you end up using, there a few variables in your decision making. 1. One is what brand does your local hospital hand out with the free gift from the nursery if there is one. 2. What brands your friends like. 3. what brands you have seen in stores or in adds on TV. 3. Price range 4. What brands your local shopping center carries, to name a few.

First, we will cover brand names. These are usually the best of the best. But not always. but here are a couple of links for you to follow. I think this makes it easier for you to find what you are looking for without clicking all over Amazon to find what you like.

And there are many that are not the name brands that work as well as these. And one at least is biodegradable. Made with Bamboo materials. And no they aren’t like stiff fabric. They are angelically soft and wick moister away from the baby to prevent rashes. If they had these back when I had my children I would have used them. My oldest broke out after a couple of hours in disposable diapers. So I had to use cloth diapers. Initially cloth diapers cost more but in the long run they more than paid for themselves. We will talk about cloth diapers later.

I think if I had a choice about diapers I would have used the cloth diapers anyway. There are many good arguments for disposable diapers. There are pros and cons to everything. You have to decide which is best for you. Like being able to tell if it is wet, besides trying to feel inside. And no stinky diaper pail sitting around. And when you go visit or shopping and have to change the diaper, you don’t have to bring a plastic bag along and put it back of your diaper bag. This leads to a stinky bag. Are you embarrassed to leave a dirty disposable diaper at someone’s house?

Reusable Cloth Diapers

I probably will be only writing about cloth diapers in this post. I will give you links, to various cloth diaper products and you can make up your mind. These are all links to amazon products because that is my only affiliate connection. If you click on one of my links and buy something I will get a bit of commission to keep my site open. Thank you in advance. It does not affect your price. The following are the names of cloth diapers available on amazon. They carry a wide variety.

Also, cloth diapers are less likely to cause rashes and irritation. And are here on Amazon to shop for. I am an Amazon affiliate so if you decide to buy here it will not affect your price but I get some commsion for advertising etc. This is how I keep my site running. There is a wide range of diapers. From fully cloth gauze diapering and not folded at all. Some are built to accompany a pull outliner. With snaps for adjustment according to weight. No need for dangerous pins.

The one other thing you will need with cloth diapers is a good laundry soap. They are so fresh and clean and dry when they come out of the dryer.

Then there are the adjustable cloth diapers designed to fit anywhere from 10 lbs. up to 35 pounds. There are a lot of snaps for adjustment. They have colors or cute pictures on the outside of the cloth diaper then require 1 or 2 liners depending on how much your baby pees. Also, there are disposable liners. very economical. Are supposed to be biodegradable/flushable. We have links for those too.

Little Girls Dresses

I remember when my girls were little, they looked the cutest is ruffly little dresses. I found the best ones at garage sales. There is no way a baby girl can wear one out. And if they used bibs rarely was there a stain on them. Of course, the price was right compared to the store. They grew out of them so quickly. Why pay big bucks for something they wore 3-4 times in 2 months.

And ""” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>sleep. The Snoo. If you can afford it or afford to rent it for a couple of months, I would do it. I mean Yes! I just got a Puppy and feel like an exhausted new mother.

Don’t be an exhausted Mother!

Keep plenty of little jumpsuits in theirdress""” rel=”noopener noreferrer”> dresser.

When they start to teeth they will drool constantly. You will need plenty of drool bibs or the chest area will be saturated with spit constantly. And if they are not spitting up you are trying to feed them. Each bite of food is spat out twice and returned back into the mouth before the food is actually swallowed. It is fun so take your time and enjoy watching your baby learn to eat the different flavors as they are slowly introduced.

My mom had to stretch the dollar. When you are getting 6 kids ready for school it was a must. But My sister never got over it. When we ordered a dress from the Montogomery Wards Catalog and it was out of stock, they would just pick one similar to it and ship that. Never knowing what they would send. sometimes they were quite weird for a kid. I was such a tomboy I don’t care much what I wore. Maybe she was teased I don’t know but she vowed her kids would never have to dress as she did.

So when she got pregnant when her husband was still in college she called me upset. I listened for a while. But I had just had a miscarriage in my 4th month so I wasn’t too sympathetic to her. It was our first major disagreement as adults. I was still hurting over the loss of my baby and she was upset because her kids would end up wearing garage sale clothing. I felt a baby was a blessing regardless of when they came into your life. Two different points of view.

She always bought good clothing for her children. They didn’t get as many outfits as my kids did but were dressed. Nice cute clothing. Maybe only 2 dresses. But My kids had one for every day of the week. I shopped garage sales and clearance and she shopped Macy’s and wherever.

Midwives Yes or No

I came from the days when if you lived in an area where hospitals are far away. You might have natural childbirth if you wanted it or not. We had a Catholic Church-run hospital. And they didn’t believe in a lot of things. And apparently, pain during childbirth was one of those things that they believed in. Another thing, they DIDN’T allow was birth control pills. There were 20 kids in just the two closest neighbors. So many women just kept having babies one after another. Even a generation later, I would have given anything for an epidural. Or a little gas. But that is just me.

My Dad worked in road construction and was only home on Friday and Saturday nights. After I got old enough, to know about these things. I secretly thought of my mother as ” Firtle Murtle.” Here she was with six kids and he still only came home for Friday and Saturday. He would work all day out in the fields. Then go to bed dead tired at night sleep until the chicken would crow. By the time I graduated high school, she had been pregnant ten times then two more after that.

She was forunate enough to live only 45 minutes away. And was concidered a high risk mom. Most of the time she went in and lay in bed and bled for a few days then had a miscarry. With her last pregnany they said the baby had to be dead after all it had been through. That was in her7th month. She said no. Three months latter she gave birth a bouncing 10 pound baby girl.

Midwife and Mother at home
checking belly to make sure baby is in the right position

Much later in life, he told me it was the “baby dolls” that caused babies. Baby dolls were a cute layered lacy ruffly pair of PJ’s that Mom wore to bed. Well, I guess I got a bit off-topic. She kept herself covered.
Midwives where specially trained nurses. With up to 3 extra years of schooling in midwifery. They worked through the hospital, and privately. They know all the Do’s and Don’ts of childbirth. You can have it at home, in a room near the hospital or even in the hospital if need be. You would call them when you became pregnant and decided to use a midwife. Then make the arrangments about birth. And you can have a natural birth in a hospital too without a midwife.

They have many ways to help Moms threw labor. Between positions, walking, breathing, and sitting on big balls. There are water births. In the hospital, there are large whirlpool tubs in each room. Mostly midwifery is based on being healthy, doing exercise, good old fashion wellness, and nutrition throughout the pregnancy, and being able to be psychologically ready for labor and delivery. Don’t worry if you make a little noise. 4 out of 5 women yells while they push.

It will be easier to find a midwife if you live close to the city. Rural areas don’t have all these extras even though it is still possible to find a midwife near you; there are a couple of places to start looking. The” American Mother and Baby Center,” ” American College of Nurse-Midwives,” And “The American Pregnancy Association.” Check out availability and cost. Do a meet and greet, so you will know if your personalities work together.

Also, another person to check out is a Doula. She is non-medical. But she provides advice and support during pregnancy and delivery. She gives emotional support. And if you find one with a lot of experience, she can be quite useful. This doubla is a person like our Great Grand Mothers would have had to use. Before the days of the gas run horse and wagon. Lol  Plus they stayed around after the delivery a few days to see to it the mother was ready to take care of baby by herself. And helped the entire family adjust to the new bundle of joy.

Although a midwife may be the best labor coach you could ever find, They can not save your life under certain conditions. Like if your placenta abrupts. Or under specific problems with the cord around the babies neck. Or if your B/P goes sky high and you begin to have seizures. And if the babies Apgard score is poor when born and does not improve, well then you need well trained NICU nurse and pediatrician. If You are full term and have had a normal Pregnancy then you have no reson to worry. They can be just as knowlegable as some doctors. They just can’t do the same procedures.

There are many books written about natural childbirth. Here are a few that will be hand to read while thinking of getting pregnant or if you are expecting.

If you like what you read just leave your email I will shoot you a weekly email. With updates about my new posts. Thank you in advance!
